Project Narrative
This project addresses the issue of gentrification, where communities become too expensive for the original and culturally rightful population to remain living in that area. Overall, we aim to symbolize the process of gentrification occurring through the medium of fabric.
The fabric features thoughts, feelings, and memories associated with the word “Home,” as shared by various participants. The permanent connection of these words with the fabric is similar to the thoughts and memories of home being infused into the identity of a community. The fabric is then destroyed, similar to the wide-spread practice of gentrification, physically destroying homes as well as ending the history of a communities culture in that area. While the fabric is physically destroyed, many thoughts and memories shared are still fully visible, much like stories being passed down through generations.
We draw stylistically from the art form of graffiti, often used as a form of protest against gentrification. This look is accomplished through the use of paint pens and spray paint, and strives for an almost cluttered, chaotic visual style, resembling a brick wall after years of graffiti. The entire installation is very process-oriented and happens in sequential steps.
Every piece of writing contributed creates a meaningful community on the fabric, evoking emotions amongst the participants when they see their contributions destroyed, akin to the emotions felt as a consequence of gentrification.
